There is to say, that perhaps the situation is best in Malawi than in other countries of the world, where a bad situation, as the humiliation of women in prison, is even more severe in countries where so much they is decanting human rights.
I bring you some examples:

In the last 25 years, in the world, the number of women and girls caught in the criminal justice system has skyrocketed; many have been swept up in the "war on drugs" and subject to increasingly punitive sentencing policies for non-violent offenders. There are now more than 200,000 women behind bars and more than one million on probation and parole. Many of these women struggle with substance abuse, mental illness, and histories of physical and sexual abuse. Few get the services they need. The toll on women, girls, and their families is devastating. And that’s not happen in Malawi...but in many other countries like America and Europe.

I bring you some examples:

In Arkansas.
Pulaski County sheriff’s deputy Willie Lee Owens was arrested for raping a female prisoner in a basement holding cell at the county courthouse. While Owens went to get a napkin so his victim could clean up, she wiped some of his semen on the inside of her bra and later gave it to investigators.

In California.
Mark Susoeff, 45, was sentenced to 120 days in jail and three years probation for having oral sex with a female prisoner. Susoeff was a guard at the Leo Chesney Community Correctional Facility (LCCC) when the incident occurred. LCCC is a minimum-security prison run by Cornell Corrections.

In Colorado
Two female prisoners from Hawai’i, Christina Riley and Jacqueline Overturf, were being held at the Brush Correctional Facility, a private prison operated by GRW Corp., when they were sexually assaulted by prison guard Russell E. Rollison.

I can continue the list and believe me it is very long and many of these abuses have been done on pregnant women ... many women are never judged in prisons like in Bangkok ... Do you still think that the situation is really bad in Malawi? I believe that for to be an African country most things work quickly and less drastic than in other countries. So, the problem is in the world not only in Malawi where it is a small part.Mary Giuffréhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13938246297844567752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370892944891083872.post-917715375224062722011-11-09T07:09:28.767-08:002011-11-09T07:09:28.767-08:00Thank you for your informative post and may I take...Thank you for your informative post and may I take the time to congratulate you on the good work you are doing out there. It must be tough to work in such conditions and know that you are just chipping away at the tip of the iceberg. From a fellow barrister's experience, I have made bail apps. in London before for heavily pregnant immigrant women with no network or abode to use as a bail address and it broke my heart when they were refused. I hope that you can find somewhere for this lady to be monitored with her liberty and her baby's health taken care of outside of the prison walls whilst the case progresses. Good luck!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
